Driving in Dubai: Salik, Parking and Road Rules Every Renter Should Know

How the Salik Toll System Works

Salik is Dubai’s electronic toll system, and it is fully automatic: there are no barriers, no booths and nothing to pay at the roadside. Each time you pass under a Salik gate on a tolled corridor such as Sheikh Zayed Road, a charge is registered against the vehicle electronically.

For renters this is simple: Yes Sure bills the tolls incurred during your rental period, so there is nothing for you to set up or top up. It is not a fine, just a road toll, but if your driving crosses the city often it is worth keeping in mind as a small running cost.

Paying for Public Parking

Most public parking in Dubai is paid and time-limited during the day. You can pay at RTA parking meters or, more conveniently, through the RTA smart-parking app by entering your plate and the zone code shown on the nearby sign. Always check the sign for the hours and tariff, as they vary by area.

Malls and hotels usually offer their own parking, often with a free initial period and valet available at the larger venues. Parking outside a marked bay or overstaying a paid session can earn a fine, so it pays to park properly and keep track of your time.

Lane Discipline and the Rules of the Road

Dubai drives on the right, and lane discipline is taken seriously: keep right except to overtake and avoid sitting in the fast lane. Tailgating and unsafe lane changes are enforced by camera, and using a handheld phone while driving is a fined offence: mount it or leave it.

Speed is monitored by extensive radar with only a small buffer above the posted limit, so treat the sign as the real limit. Drive predictably, leave space, and you will find Dubai’s wide, well-maintained roads genuinely easy and pleasant to navigate.

Seatbelts, Safety and Staying Fine-Free

Seatbelt laws apply to every occupant, front and back, and children must be secured appropriately; it is both the law and the sensible thing to do. Combined with sober, attentive driving, buckling up covers the basics that keep you safe and fine-free.

If a fine does appear during your rental, it must be settled within 48 hours through an official channel, and we will send you the details straight away. Follow the road rules, park correctly and keep an eye on our messages, and driving in Dubai stays smooth from pickup to return.
